Linear Filtering of Images Based on Properties of Vision

V. Ralph Algazi - Gary E. Ford - Hong Chen

Abstract:

A new formulation is presented for the design of linear image filters, based on some properties of human visual perception. For low pass filters, this new formulation leads to introducing the concept of an ideal low pass image filter which provides a response that is superior perceptually to that of the classical ideal low pass filter. We also consider anisotropic filters that provide some additional flexibility and improved performance in the processing of images.
